Clifton Beach Information

Not far from Cape Town city centre lies Clifton Beach. Clifton boasts 4 beaches separated by boulders; these are some of the most fashionable beaches in the country - again with pretty cold water! Some of the first houses to be built in the area were built as emergency housing after the First World War - quite a turnaround to today, when these houses sell for tremendous amounts of money! The area surrounding Camps Bay is a scenic and botanical reserve. The area is mainly residential but is well worth a visit to see some of the engineering feats that it must have taken to get the houses there! Rooftop parking is a common sight and look out for the lifts which carry residents up the cliff face to their homes.

Clifton beach is set at the foot of the Atlantic ocean, and has a rather chilly waterfront, although it could be refreshing on a hot summers day.

The beach is made up out of 4 smaller beaches, or coves, called 1st Beach, 2nd Beach, 3rd Beach and 4th Beach. These four beaches are separated by massive granite boulders, which shelters the beaches from the South Easter and gives it a look and feel of a mediterranean resort.

Clifton Beach is known for it's beautiful sunsets, and was rated one of the top ten beaches by Discovery Channel in 2003. Behind Clifton Beach, the 12 Appostles reaches to the sky, being the buttresses of Table Mountain.

In the summer, Clifton Beach is rather popular, with many people visiting. Parking is scarce, and should be found early enough. 4th Beach is the busiest, having Kiosks where one can buy snacks, as well as cold drinks. It also has good changing and bathroom facilities.

The beach is a must visit, especially on a very hot summers day, and makes up part of Cape Town's Golden Mile. Long, sandy beaches, hot sun, fresh sea air and good food makes this part of the country one of the most sought after holiday destinations.
