The surf is up

There is a place that brings to mind surfing, sunshine and beautiful beaches; to the locals this place is known as "J-Bay". Jeffrey's Bay is a beach paradise and is rated among the ten best surfing spots in the world. Every July the Billabong Surfing Festival is hosted here and surfers from around the world come to Jeffrey's Bay to enjoy the rolling surf that the sea here has to offer. This costal town is home to the perfect wave, a relaxed lifestyle, endless summers and abundant shells, its no wonder that this town is world-renowned.

The temperatures at Jeffrey's Bay are moderate all year round with scattered rain throughout the year. The summers are warm with a very temperate humidity and winters are warm and pleasant with water sports being practiced all year round. Stretching from Cape Receife in the east to Cape St Francis further west Jeffrey's Bay is midway between the large Gamtoos and Kromme Rivers.

Attractions of Jeffrey's Bay

There are many attractions in Jeffrey's Bay and this town has bee drawing tourists and retirees since 1894 when a trading store was set up.

  • Beaches: The beaches at Jeffrey's Bay are safe with numerous water sports available. There are also many surf breaks, each with its own magic; the different surfing spots include Kitchen Window, Tubes, Super Tubes, Point and Albatross. There is an abundance of shells for the avid shell collector and the beaches also offer a good angling site.
  • Shell Museum: At Jeffrey's Bay there is a shell museum which houses over 600 shells from all over the world. There is also a shell craft section where you can purchase crafts.
  • Paradise beach: This picturesque spot situated at the confluence of the Seekoei and Swart Rivers and is the breeding ground of one of the largest swan colonies.
  • Nature Reserves: For all those who enjoy nature and wildlife there are a few nature reserves in Jeffrey's Bay that can be explored.
    • There is the Seekoei Nature Reserve, which is situated at Aston Bay and offers a 3-kilometer hiking trail, 120 different bird species and small buck.
    • Kabeljouws Nature Reserve is situated to the east and offers good waterfowl sightings. This is one of the last unspoilt river estuaries in the Eastern Cape.
    • Noorsekloof Nature Reserve is a 28-hectare reserve that boasts a 3-kilometer trail along the stream.
    • Baviaans Kloof and Cape St Francis Nature Reserve
  • There are various surfing hot spots but it is always good to remember that Boneyard is for locals only and locals will take offence if you attempt to surf in their territory. Otherwise the surf at Jeffrey's Bay is a sought after water activity although there is also diving available.
  • Jeffrey's Bay is the hub of 'white gold' more commonly known as the calamari industry of the Eastern Cape and is therefore in the position to offer locals and tourists the opportunity to indulge themselves in this culinary delight.
